Ceylon H3038-33862d.jpg

This specimen was part of lot 33862 in Heritage sale 3038 (Dallas, January 2015), which sold for $282. The catalog description[1] noted, "British Colony - George VI Six Coin Proof Set 1951, KM-PS1. Mintage of 150 sets in Proof. With original IG mint envelopes enclosed." This five cent piece was struck for Ceylon 1951-62 and is the last of the denomination to bear the royal portrait. The SCWC does not list any circulation strikes for this date which must be an omission as all the other denominations are plentiful. Ceylon attained its independence in 1948 after the British left India and is now known as Sri Lanka.

Recorded mintage: unknown plus 150 proofs.

Specification: 3.24 g, nickel brass, 18 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM 120, KM PS1 for the set.
