Ceylon 1900 cent
This specimen was lot 40143 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Costa Mesa, CA, August 2021), where it sold for $2,400. The catalog description[1] noted, "CEYLON. Cent, 1900. London Mint. Victoria. PCGS PROOF-64 Brown Gold Shield. The only certified example at PCGS, with NGC having seen just one example in Proof (a silver off-metal strike). As such, a VERY RARE offering with deep brown color and great beauty. Ex: R. J. Ford Collection. Ex: Mark E. Freehill Collection." This type is listed for 1870 and 1890-1900 and is common. Restrikes in silver and gold exist. The earlier mix of stivers and rixdollars was inherited by the British from the Dutch, who occupied the island until 1796. Bronze ¼, ½, one and five cents were issued in bronze and ten, 25 and 50 cents issued in silver. Ceylon attained its independence in 1948 after the British left India and is now known as Sri Lanka.
