This specimen was lot 776 in Stephen Album sale 30 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2018), where it sold for $129.25. The catalog description[1] noted, "CEYLON: AR 1/48 rixdollar, 1801, first issue, heavier weight, some weakness of strike, VF, R, ex Dr. Kurt Oster Collection." This 1/48 rixdollar piece was struck by the hammer in Ceylon. Known dates include 1801-03, 1811-16. This mix of stivers and rixdollars was inherited by the British from the Dutch, who occupied the island until 1796. Decimal coinage was instituted in 1870. Ceylon attained her independence in 1948 after the British left India and is now known as Sri Lanka.
