This specimen was lot 29504 in Heritage sale 3040 (Long Beach, April 2015), where it sold for $881.25. The catalog description[1] noted, "British Colony 1/48 Rixdollar Mule 1802 AU50 Brown NGC, An admirable, chestnut-toned mule featuring a reverse design that depicts the emblematic elephant of Ceylon and the obverse design of an East India Company Madras 20 Cash. A lovely selection from this popular British Colony with minimal wear and a soft central strike." This 1/48 rixdollar piece was machine struck in England for Ceylon. This mix of stivers and rixdollars was inherited by the British from the Dutch, who occupied the island until 1796. Decimal coinage was instituted in 1870. Ceylon attained her independence in 1948 after the British left India and is now known as Sri Lanka.
