This specimen was lot 74607 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2023), where it sold for $144. The catalog description[1] noted, "SPAIN. Castile & Leon. Cornado, ND (1284-95). Leon Mint. Sancho IV. PCGS MS-61. Obverse: + SAnC-II RЄX, crowned bust left; Reverse: + CASTЄLLЄ LЄGIOnIS, castle with "L-★" mintmark above. A charming Mint State example with gently lustrous surfaces and full detail remaining." Sancho IV, son and heir of Alfonso IX the Wise, ruled Castile and Leon until his death in 1295, aged 36 years. Sancho's coinage comprised doblas in gold and cornados in billon. A cornado was nine dineros, the dinero having been debased to uselessness. This type was struck at Burgos, Coruña, Cuenca, Leon, Murcia, Toledo and Seville with various mintmarks. Cornados seisenos, worth six dineros, were also struck.
