Künker sale 406, lot 4735
Casale about 1494, in the northern part of Montferrat

This specimen was lot 4735 in Künker sale 406 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €420 (about US$551 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ITALIEN, CASALE-MONTFERRAT, Bonifacius II. 1518-1530. Testone o. J. Selten in dieser Erhaltung. Fast vorzüglich. (Italy, marquisate of Casale, Boniface II, 1518-30, undated testone. Scarce in this quality, about extremely fine.)"

Casale, originally part of the Marquisate of Montferrat, passed thru various hands before becoming an estate of the Dukes of Mantua. On the extinction of that duchy, Casale passed to Savoy in 1713. It is today part of Italy.
