Casale about 1494, in the northern part of Montferrat

This specimen was lot 3983 in Stack's-Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2015), where it sold for $458.25. The catalog description[1] noted, "ITALY. Casale Monferrato. Teston, ND (1494-18). Guglielmo II Palacologo (1494-1518). PCGS EF-45 Secure Holder. Lightly toned." Casale, originally part of the Marquisate of Montferrat, passed thru various hands before becoming an estate of the Dukes of Mantua. On the extinction of that duchy, Casale passed to Savoy in 1713. It is today part of Italy.
