Carmagnola in northwest Italy

This specimen was lot 294 in Fritz Rudolf Künker GmbH & Co. KG Auction 380 (Osnabrück, February 2023) where it sold for 27,000 EUR (about US$34,668 including buyer's fees). The lot description noted,

"ITALIEN. CARMAGNOLA. Michele Antonio di Saluzzo, 1504-1528, Tallero 1516. Drapiertes Brustbild der Margarethe von Foix l. mit Schleier//Kahler Baum mit darin hängendem, zweigeteilten Wappenschild, in der Baumkrone Vogel. Von großer Seltenheit. Schönes Renaissanceporträt. Hübsche Patina, kl. Kratzer auf dem Porträt sowie auf dem Rand, sehr schön/sehr schön-vorzüglich. (margraviate of Carmagnola, Michael Anthony of Saluzzo, 1504-28, tallero of 1516. Obverse: Draped and veiled bust of Margarethe von Foix left; reverse: Bare tree with two-part coat of arms hanging in it, bird in the treetop. Of great rarity. Beautiful Renaissance portrait. Nice patina, minor scratches on the portrait and on the edge, very fine to extremely fine.)

Margarethe von Foix (*1473, Foix; †1536, Castres) war nach dem Tode ihres Mannes Ludwig II. im Jahre 1504 Regentin von Saluzzo (Carmagnola) für ihren minderjährigen Sohn Michele Antonio. (Margaret of Foix (1473-1536) was regent of Saluzzo (Carmagnola) for her minor son Michele Antonio after the death of her husband Louis II in 1504.)"

Carmagnola was an obscure corner of the marquisate of Saluzzo, itself a minor state in northwest Italy. It was later incorporated into Sardinia and is today part of Italy.
