Carmagnola (1529-37) testone
This specimen was lot 42455 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2024), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "Exceptional Testone from the Penultimate Marquis of Saluzzo, ITALY. Saluzzo. Testone, ND (1529-37). Carmagnola Mint. Francesco Ludovico di Saluzzo. PCGS Genuine--Repaired, EF Details. A classic RARITY from the early modern Italian states series, this impressive specimen offers a powerful rendition of the Marquis, with exceptional detail throughout. A flan crack is observed, as well as some subtle repair in the fields, but some engaging color has begun to reappear. Given the dearth of examples available, these aspects are rather happily and easily overlooked, as this cataloger was able to locate just two others of the type to have crossed the auction block. From the Richard Margolis Collection." Carmagnola was an obscure corner of the marquisate of Saluzzo, itself a minor state in northwest Italy. It was later incorporated into Sardinia and is today part of Italy.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver.
Catalog reference: MIR-152.
