The first specimen was lot 23782 in Heritage sale 3015 (Long Beach, September 2011), where it sold for $2,530. The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic gold 100 Escudos 1990, PF68 Ultra Cameo NGC, Visit of Pope John II. Scarce and sought after issue featuring this popular Pontiff." This type was struck in copper-nickel for the masses and in silver for the mid-level VIP's. Undoubtedly, the gold issue went to the top politicians and dignitaries attenting the event.
