Canada 1940 50 cents

from the Stack's Bowers 2018 Collector's Choice sale, lot 70280

This specimen was lot 70280 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, May 2018), where it sold for $50. The catalog description^[1] noted, "CANADA. 50 Cents, 1940. PCGS MS-62 Secure Holder. Frosty and virtually free of marks. Perhaps worthy of a higher grade but for a slight weakness of strike on the reverse." The death of George V provided the occasion for the complete redesign of Canadian coinage with more distinctly Canadian motifs. This type was struck 1937-47 with the wartime issues of 1940-45 being the most common. Silver was removed from the fifty cent piece in 1968.
