from the Stack's Bowers 2019 NYINC, lot 40060
Canada SB119-40060r.jpg

This type was struck 1858 and 1870-1901 in substantial quantities and most dates are fairly plentiful up to Extremely Fine. The catalog notes this as a better date but not a key. This specimen was lot 40060 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2019), where it sold for $2,400. The catalog description[1] noted, "CANADA. 5 Cents, 1896. PCGS MS-66 Gold Shield. A clear companion to the other MS-66 graded example in this sale, possessing similarly choice surfaces with undisturbed satiny luster and equally exceptional patina, this example holding rich green coloration in the centers and fiery maroon, russet and yellow tone that circles the edges. Undoubtedly elite quality for the date and sure to attract the attention it deserves from Canadian specialists as such."

Recorded mintage: 1,500,000.

Specification: 1.16 g, 0.925 fine silver, .034 troy oz ASW, reeded edge.

Catalog reference: KM 2.
