Canada H3064-29452r.jpg

This specimen was lot 29452 in Heritage sale 3064 (Chicago, April 2018), where it sold for $4,080. The catalog description[1] noted, "Lower Canada. Bank of Montreal. "Side View" 1/2 Penny Token 1838 MS63+ Brown NGC. Medal alignment, left fence has 11 pailings. Copper. Glittering even brown surfaces. From the Doug Robins Collection of Canadian Tokens." The SCWC notes that the Bank of Montreal, the Banque du Peuple and City Bank were granted the right to issue halfpenny and penny tokens, which right was exercised 1837-39, 1842-45 and 1852. However, when official provincial coinage was issued in 1858, decimal coinage similar to United States coins was chosen. This type was struck along with a one penny token (KM Tn16) 1838-39 but was never placed into circulation. It is now rare.

Recorded mintage: 120,000 but mostly melted without being issued.

Specification: copper, this specimen.

Catalog reference: Br-524, LC-10A3, Courteau-31, KM Tn15.
