Cambrai 1569 1/2 ecu
This specimen was lot 976 in Jean Elsen sale 143 (Brussels, December 2019), where it sold for €160 (about US$209 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"CAMBRAI, Archevêché, Maximilien de Berghes (1556-1570), AR demi-écu (demi-daldre), 1569. Au titre de Maximilien II. D/ Ecu de Berghes sous un heaume. R/ Aigle impériale couronnée. Rare Craquelure du flan au droit. presque Très Beau. (Germany, archbishopric of Cambrai, Maximilian of Berghes, 1558-70, half écu of 1569, struck in the name of Maximilian II. Obverse: helmeted arms; reverse: crowned imperial eagle. Die crack on obverse, about Very Fine.)"
This half écu accompanied a full écu (Dav-8214) but is likely much scarcer. When it was issued, the archbishop was a semi-independent prince but subject to the Spanish Netherlands. Cambrai is now in France, in the department of the Nord.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver, this specimen 14,14 g.
