Cambodia 1974 10000 riels
This specimen was lot 71114 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, October 2019), where it sold for $312. The catalog description[1] noted, "CAMBODIA. 10000 Riels, 1974. NGC PROOF-64 Ultra Cameo. Commemorating the first president of Khmer Republic, Lon Nol, this RARE, exceedingly lustrous near Gem features an intense cameo nature with supremely frosted devices." In 1974, the government of Cambodia was busy collapsing as the Khmer Rouge relentlessly advanced. Soon, Pol Pot would establish his communist paradise, causing the death of over two million people. It seems unlikely that any of these coins actually made it to Cambodia.
Recorded mintage: 500 plus 800 proofs.
Specification: 38.03 g, 0.925 fine silver.
