Cacahuatepec 1917 50 centavos
This specimen was lot 11442 in Ponterio sale 169 (Baltimore, November 2012), where it sold for $705. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Revolution Guerrero-Cacahuatepec. 50 Centavos, 1917. One carbon spot on the reverse, toned. ALMOST UNCIRCULATED. Ex: Howland Wood Collection." This coin was issued in limited quantities in the closing stages of the revolution at the town of Cacahuatepec in Guerrero state south of Mexico City. It is actually heavier than the official fifty centavos (KM 445) of 1905-18, which was 12.5 g. The most common issue from this locale is the five centavos (KM 648). A very rare silver peso was also issued (KM 651).
