Sincona sale 43, lot 3160

This specimen was lot 3160 in Sincona sale 43 (Zürich, October 2017), where it sold for 375 CHF (aboout US$448 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BULGARIEN, Republik, seit 1946 100 Lewa 1984. Jahrzehnt für die Frauen 1976-1985. Selten. Nur 500 Exemplare geprägt. Polierte Platte. FDC. (people's republic of Bulgaria, since 1946, one hundred leva of 1984, international women's decade, Rare. Only 500 pieces struck, Choice Proof.)"

This rare NCLT, the only 100 leva issued by the Communists, comes in two varieties: KM 150, with .076 fine silver, and KM 150a, with copper only. The Communist regime, beset by corruption and an aging leadership, was swept away with the collapse of all the Eastern Bloc regimes in 1989-90.

Recorded mintage: 500 (KM 150) plus 2,032 (KM 150a).
