Buenos Aires 1856 2 reales
This specimen was lot 702 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 28 (Winter Park, FL, November 2020), where it sold for $1,020. The catalog description[1] noted, "Buenos Aires, Argentina, 2 reales, 1856, NGC MS 62 BN, finest known in NGC census, ex-O'Brien. Scarce issue (single set of dies known), fairly bold strike (small weak spots near rims as usual) but with very nice original color and traces of luster around details, in fact the finest of just two in the NGC by four grades. Pedigreed to the John O'Brien collection (stated on label)." This type was struck 1853-56 and is common in low grade. The next issue (KM 11) of 1860-61 closed out the series of coppers from Buenos Aires. Regular federal coinage began in 1882.
Recorded mintage: unknown but a better date.
Specification: copper, 6-8 g, 31-32 mm diameter.
