Künker sale 386, lot 5102

This specimen was lot 5102 in Künker sale 386 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €1,100 (about US$1,422 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRAUNSCHWEIG-WOLFENBÜTTEL, FÜRSTENTUM, Wilhelm, 1831-1884. Taler 1838, CvC. Sehr selten in dieser Erhaltung. Fast Stempelglanz. (duchy of Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel, William I, 1831-84, thaler of 1838. Very scarce in this quality. About uncirculated.)"

The auctioneers listed this as Dav-631, which has an order chain around the shield of the reverse. This is actually Dav-632, with mantled arms on the reverse. That type is not listed for 1838, so this is probably a pattern. Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel struck thalers to the Prussian standard (22.27 g, 0.750 fine silver) until 1855, then vereinsthalers thereafter.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 22.27 g, 0.750 fine silver, this specimen is 22.25 g.
