Stack's Bowers November 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 73527

This specimen was lot 73527 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2023), where it sold for $240. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Brunswick. 24 Mariengroschen (2/3 Taler), 1755-IBH. Zellerfeld Mint. Karl I. PCGS AU-58. A lovely example of the type with argent surfaces and toning in hints of cobalt, gold, emerald, and sable in the protected areas of the peripheries. Well-struck with only a bit of shadow on the reverse opposite the Wild Man figure. Attractive and desirable. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." This type was struck 1735-80 and is common. Twenty-four mariengroschen started out as two-thirds of a thaler but had slipped to half a thaler by the end of Karl's reign. Mintmaster IBH (Johann Benjamin Hecht) appears 1739-62.
