Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel 1610 thaler Dav-6285
This specimen was lot 73640 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2023), where it sold for $240. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Wolfenbuttel. Taler, 1610. Zellerfeld Mint; mm: crowned heart and flower. Heinrich Julius. PCGS Genuine--Scratched, EF Details. This relatively early Wild Man example offers an array of grays paired with deeply toned cobalt and russet almost leaning to sable. The design elements and legends are well-defined and the noted scratch is unobtrusive. Attractive. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection. Ex Shield Collection, Preger & Oppenheim 176 (18 March 1981), lot #176 (with ticket)." This type was struck 1600-13 in Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel at Zellerfeld (shown here) and Goslar and is among the more common thalers of the period. The "wild man" design was popular in Brunswick and Hannover at the time and appeared on many different thalers and minors.
