Stack's Bowers November 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 73645
SB1123-73645r.jpg

This specimen was lot 73645 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2023), where it sold for $168. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Wolfenbuttel. 1/14 Taler, 1610. Goslar Mint. Heinrich Julius. PCGS VF-25. A rare one-year type. This example exhibits argent surfaces with darker gray toning in the fields and protected areas and thus serving to highlight the design and lettering. Moderate wear with some localized weaknesses in strike. Compelling. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection. Includes ticket from Kuenker." We do not pretend to have an explanation for this bizarre issue, struck 1610 only and never again. A 1/28 thaler also exists.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: KM-36; Welter-668.
