Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel 1603 1/2 thaler
This specimen was lot 461 in Künker sale 293 (Osnabrück, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €190 (about US$256 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRAUNSCHWEIG-WOLFENBÜTTEL, HERZOGTUM Heinrich Julius, 1589-1613. 1/2 Reichstaler 1603, Zellerfeld. R Leicht berieben, sehr schön +. (Germany, duchy of Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel, Henry Julius, 1589-1613, half thaler of 1603, Zellerfeld mint. Scarce, light smoothing, very fine or better.)"
This specimen seems to be a product of the Zellerfeld mint which was operated by mintmaster Heinrich Oeckeler who also worked at the Goslar mint. This type is recorded for both mints. It was issued 1600-04 and is common. The "wild man" design was popular in Brunswick and Hannover at the time and appeared on many different thalers and minors.
Reported Mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver.
