Brunswick-Luneburg-Celle 1705 1/2 thaler
This specimen was lot 5623 in Künker sale 354 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €1,300 (about US$1,809 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRAUNSCHWEIG UND LÜNEBURG, BRAUNSCHWEIG-LÜNEBURG, FÜRSTENTUM, Georg Wilhelm, 1665-1705. 1/2 Reichstaler 1705, Clausthal, auf seinen Tod am 28. August. RR Prachtexemplar. Feine alte Patina, fast Stempelglanz. Aus der Sammlung eines Ingenieurs. Exemplar der Auktion Fritz Rudolf Künker 110, Osnabrück 2006, Nr. 4458. (Germany, duchy of Brunswick-Luneburg-Celle, George William, 1665-1705, half thaler of 1705, Clausthal mint, on the death of the duke on August 28. Very rare, choice example, fine old patina, about uncirculated.)"
This rare issue is the last half thaler from this branch of the Brunswick dukes, which fell extinct in 1705 on the death of Georg Wilhelm. The property passed to Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg, which later became Hannover. One, half, quarter and eighth thalers were issued on this occasion.
