Brunswick-Luneburg-Celle 1638-HS thaler Dav-6492
This specimen was lot 5595 in Künker sale 354 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €700 (about US$974 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRAUNSCHWEIG UND LÜNEBURG, BRAUNSCHWEIG-LÜNEBURG, FÜRSTENTUM, Friedrich, 1636-1648. Reichstaler 1638, Clausthal. Attraktives Exemplar mit hübscher Patina, winz. Prägeschwäche, vorzüglich +. Exemplar der Auktion Heidelberger Münzhandlung, Herbert Grün 47, Heidelberg 2007, Nr. 3074. (Germany, duchy of Brunswick-Luneburg-Celle, Frederick, 1636-48, thaler of 1638, Clausthal mint. Attractive example with handsome patina, slightly weakly struck, extemely fine or better.)"
The second specimen was lot 32218 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2024), where it sold for $432. The catalog description[2] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Calenberg & Luneburg (Celle). Taler, 1638-HS. Clausthal Mint. Friedrich IV. NGC AU-55. A near-Mint example, this crown does exhibit some minor weakness as well as planchet stress, but reveals enchanting toning and a great wholesome nature as well." This type was struck 1637-38 and is fairly common. The very similar Dav-6494 of 1637-43 has the mintmaster's initials below the date. The duchy of Brunswick-Luneburg-Celle fell extinct in 1705 and passed to Hannover.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver, this specimen 29.02 g.
