Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg 1681-RB 1-1/2 thaler Dav-LS240
This specimen was lot 1030 in Sincona Auction 100 (Zürich, October 2025), where it sold for 9,000 CHF (about US$13,565 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"DEUTSCHLAND Braunschweig-Lüneburg-Calenberg-Hannover, Herzogtum, Ernst August, 1679-1698. Löser zu 1 1/2 Taler 1681, Zellerfeld. 43.37 g. Ausbeute der Harzer Gruben. Mit Wertpunze. Münzmeister Rudolf Bornemann. SOLA BONA QUÆ HONESTA Gekröntes Monogramm, umher Lorbeerkranz, umgeben von 15 kleinen, gekrönten Wappen auf Palmzweigen, Schwert und Bischofsstab dahinter gekreuzt, unten R-B und ANNO 1681 sowie die eingepunzte Wertzahl. Rv. Ross springt nach links, darüber hält eine aus Wolken kommende Hand einen Lorbeerkranz, unten Bergwerkslandschaft und Grubenquerschnitt mit arbeitenden Bergmännern. Sehr selten in dieser Erhaltung. Prachtexemplar mit herrlicher Patina. Das durch NGC zweithöchstbewertete Exemplar. (Germany, duchy of Brunswick-Lüneburg-Calenberg-Hannover, Ernest Augustus, 1679-98, 1½ thaler of 1681, Zellerfeld mint, for the Harz mines, with value punched in. Obverse:crowned monogram in a laurel wreath, fifteen small crowned shields around, over pal branches and crossed sword and crozier, date below; reverse: stallion springs left over a mining scene, a hand holds a victory wreath overhead. This thaler was struck to promote the mines in the Harz mountains which provided so much of the duke's wealth. The dies were also used to strike double and triple thalers, with the value being punched in afterwards. While not rare, they have always been popular and priced accordingly.
