This specimen was lot 1140 in Jean Elsen sale 140 (Brussels, March 2019), where it sold for €2,500 (about US$3,330 including buyer's fees). The catalog description^[1] noted,

"BRUNEI, Hassanal Bolkiah (1967-), AV 1000 dollars, 1978. 10th anniversary of Sultan's coronation. Case and certificate nr. 712. Proof."

Unlike many of her neighbors, Brunei on the island of Borneo has become wealthy on the deposits of oil and natural gas. The area was formerly a British colony.

Recorded mintage: 1,000 proofs.

Specification: 50 g, 0.917 fine gold, 1.474 troy oz AGW.
