Bremen and Verden 1683-IS 1/24 thaler
This specimen was lot 11071 in Stack's Bowers June 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction (Copenhagen, June 2026), where it sold for €109 (about US$127). The catalog description[1] noted, "SWEDEN. Bremen & Verden. 1/24 Taler, 1683-IS. Bremen & Verden Mint. Karl XI. NGC VF-35. Decent example for the type. From the L.E. Bruun Collection. Ex: Countship of Brahesminde Collection (Private Sale - 1922). Ex: Leopold Welzl von Wellenheim Collection (Vienna - 1846) Lot #5050." The duchy of Bremen and Verden is the name given to the archbishopric of Bremen after it was secularized by the terms of the Treaty of Westphalia and handed over to the king of Sweden. The Swedish ruled the province until 1719, when it was sold to Hannover. The Hanseatic city of Bremen was not part of the deal. This obscure type was struck 1676, 1682-84, with the 1676 being the rare date.
