Künker sale 386, lot 5245
Bremen and Hannover in 1789

This specimen was lot 5245 in Künker sale 386 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €750 (about US$969 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BREMEN UND VERDEN, HERZOGTUM UNTER SCHWEDEN, Karl XI. 1660-1697. 2/3 Taler 1675, Stade. Hübsche Patina, sehr schön-vorzüglich. (duchy of Bremen and Verden, under Swedish rule, Charles XI, 1660-97, two-thirds thaler of 1675, Stade mint. Handsome patina, very fine to extremely fine.)"

The duchy of Bremen and Verden is the name given to the archbishopric of Bremen after it was secularized by the terms of the Treaty of Westphalia and handed over to the king of Sweden. The Swedish ruled the province until 1719, when it was sold to Hannover. The Hanseatic city of Bremen was not part of the deal. This gulden also comes with a bare bust of the king (KM 89), which is priced the same.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 16.42 g, the weight of 9/16 thaler.

Catalog reference: KM 87, Ahlström 19; Dav-324.
