Bremen 1660-TI thaler Dav-5107
This specimen was lot 20579 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2019), where it sold for $1,380. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Bremen. Taler, 1660-TI. PCGS AU-55 Gold Shield. A RARE type that is absolutely perfect for the assigned grade, featuring old cabinet-toned surfaces that contain intermingled shades of green and gold on both sides. Magnified inspection only heightens ones admiration of this piece, with significant luster appearing beneath the tone and a refreshing dearth of contact marks. A bold strike, just short of complete, rounds out the exceptional appeal. Worthy of a strong bid to secure this elusive Taler. From the Linda Collection." This type was accompanied by a double thaler (Dav-5106). Most Bremen issues were emitted by the free city of Bremen, still today a major port on the North Sea coast of Germany. However, the hinterland formed the archbishopric of Bremen which persisted after the region converted to Lutheranism in the mid-1500's. Finally, as a consequence of the Thirty Years War, the state was secularized and handed over to the king of Sweden and ruled by him until 1719.
