In 1942, during the presidency of Getulio Vargas, the réis was dropped as a unit of currency after 400 years and the cruzeiro adopted. The cruzeiro itself was replaced in 1967 by the "novo cruzeiro," worth 1000 old cruzeiros. The "novo cruzeiro" lasted until 1985. Further currency "reforms" occurred in 1986, 1989, 1990, 1993 and 1994. The last one, the reais, seems to have stuck as it is still in use. The twenty-five centavos shown has been struck from 1998 to at least 2015 (the last date listed in the SCWC). This date is common.
