Brazil 2002 50 centavos rev DSLR.jpg

This fifty centavos was introduced in 2002 and is still in production as of 2017. It is a derivative of a similar coin (KM 651) struck in copper nickel in 2001. A scarce error exists (KM 683) wherein the obverse was muled with a five centavos reverse. There are two Brazilian politicians named Rio Branco, father and son. The elder was José Maria da Silva Paranhos, Viscount of Rio Branco (1819 –1880), a monarchist, diplomat, teacher and journalist. The younger was José Maria da Silva Paranhos Jr., Baron of Rio Branco (1845–1912), a diplomat, geographer, historian, monarchist, politician and professor, considered to be the "father of Brazilian diplomacy". He negotiated the treaties that define most of Brazil's current borders. The portrait on the coin matches that of the younger Rio Branco.

Recorded mintage: 189,952,000.

Specification: 6.8 g, stainless steel, 23 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM 651a.
