CNG Lissner sale, lot 1304
from the Mountain Groan Collection
Brazil 1922 500 reis rev DSLR.jpg

The first specimen was lot 1304 in Classical Numismatic Group's sale of the Lissner Collection (Chicago, August 2014), where it sold for $145.20. The catalog description[1] noted, "BRAZIL, Republic. 1889-1930. AL-Æ 500 Réis. Rio de Janeiro mint. Dually dated 1822 and 1922. Error: BBAZIL instead of BRAZIL. In NGC encapsulation graded MS 64. Lightly toned choice uncirculated. Extremely rare and only one ever graded." The "BBAZIL" error shown here is well documented but it is hard to tell if it is the result of mispunching the die or merely an unlucky die break, which seems more likely. The coin is otherwise common.

Recorded mintage: 13,744,000.

Specification: 3.90 g, alumnum bronze, 22.7 mm diameter, this specimen Ø23 mm, 4.14 g, 6h axis.

Catalog reference: KM 521.2 ("BBAZIL" error).
