Shown is a copper forty réis of the United States of Brazil, struck 1889-1912. It is accompanied by a similar twenty réis (KM 490). The forty réis, a descendant of the forty réis of colonial times, ceased production after 1912 and was replaced in 1918 by a copper-nickel fifty réis.

Recorded mintage: 4,226,000, a common date.

Specification: bronze.
