Brazil 1909 20000 reis
This specimen was lot 23174 in Heritage sale 3030 (New York, January 2014), where it sold for $3,525. The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic gold 20000 Reis 1909, MS63 NGC. Heavy obverse die polish lines (as made) produce a mesmerizing luster and light tone further elevates the eye appeal. A high-end example with few visual hindrances - very close to the next numerical grade." This type, struck 1889-1922 during the early republic, is, with the 10000 réis, the last gold coin struck for circulation in Brazil. It is much more available than its smaller sister. Most survivors are graded AU because of heavy bagmarks rather than wear.
