Brazil 1898 20000 reis
This specimen was lot 23165 in Heritage sale 3030 (New York, January 2014), where it sold for $5,581.25. The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic gold 20000 Reis 1898, MS64 NGC. An impressive and scarcely seen near-Gem of this large Republic issue with bold frosty luster atop the carefully preserved surfaces. An outstanding example and worthy of type collector attention." This type, struck 1889-1922 during the early republic, is, with the 10000 réis, the last gold coin struck for circulation in Brazil. It is much more available than its smaller sister. Most survivors are graded AU because of heavy bagmarks rather than wear.
