Heritage sale 3030, lot 23166

This specimen was lot 23166 in Heritage sale 3030 (New York, January 2014), where it sold for $8,225. The catalog description^[1] noted, "Republic gold 20000 Reis 1899, MS64 NGC. Impressively struck and minimally marked with full mint bloom remaining atop the surfaces. Certainly to attract attention from the high-end type collector." This type, struck 1889-1922 during the early republic, is, with the 10000 réis, the last gold coin struck for circulation in Brazil. It is much more available than its smaller sister. Most survivors are graded AU because of heavy bagmarks rather than wear.
