This specimen was lot 24061 in Heritage sale 3026 (Long Beach, October 2013), where it sold for $1,762.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic gold 20000 Reis 1895, MS61 NGC, lightly toned with noticeable surface abrasions, scarce date with a mintage of 4,811." This type, struck 1889-1922 during the early republic, is, with the 10000 réis, the last gold coin struck for circulation in Brazil. It is much more available than its smaller sister. Most survivors are graded AU because of heavy bagmarks rather than wear.
