This specimen was lot 23161 in Heritage sale 3030 (New York, January 2014), where it sold for $2,232.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic gold 20000 Reis 1894, AU58 NGC. Sharply detailed in the centers with ample remaining luster. While very common for the type, some planchet adjustment marks (as made) remain evident around the reverse dentils." This type, struck 1889-1922 during the early republic, is, with the 10000 réis, the last gold coin struck for circulation in Brazil. It is much more available than its smaller sister. Most survivors are graded AU because of heavy bagmarks rather than wear.
