This specimen was lot 1252 in the Eliasberg sale, where it sold for $2,990. The catalog description[1] noted, "1816 4,000 reis. Rio mint. MS-65 (NGC). Crowned arms, legends and denomination around/plain cross in quadralobe within circle, legends and date around. Lustrous medium gold with highly reflective surfaces. An exceptional example of this rare one year type with variant reverse legends. The Mint State Norweb coin brought $1,760. From the John H. Clapp Collection; Clapp estate to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr., 1942." The type was struck 1816 only.

Recorded mintage: 91,000 (KM 312 and KM 235.2).

Specification: 8.07 g, 0.917 fine gold, .237 troy oz AGW; this specimen: 8.03 grams, 26.40 mm diameter.
