This specimen was lot 23342 in Heritage sale 3024 (Chicago, April 2013), where it sold for $1,762.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "João VI Prince Regent gold 4000 Reis 1811-B, MS62 NGC, an attractive piece with lightly toned surfaces." This type is known from Bahia (1805-16) and Rio (1808-17) and is common. 1811/10 overdates exist. This type is the most common of the "moidores."
Recorded mintage: 87,000 struck at Rio plus 19,000 from Bahia (shown here).
Specification: 8.07 g, 0.917 fine gold, .237 troy oz AGW.
