The first specimen was lot 1237 in the Eliasberg sale, where it sold for $1,265. The catalog description[1] noted, "1806 6,400 reis. Rio mint. MS-63 (NGC). Draped and laureated bust of João as prince regent to right, legends and date around/crowned arms. Lustrous yellow gold, somewhat reflective in the fields. Bright and attractive. From the John H. Clapp Collection; Clapp estate to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr., 1942." The type was struck 1805-17 with the portrait of João as Prince Regent (he later became king João VI).
Recorded mintage: 96,000.
Specification: 14.34 g, 0.917 fine gold, .423 troy oz AGW; the Eliasberg specimen: 14.44 grams, 31.70 mm diameter.
