This specimen was lot 23331 in Heritage sale 3024 (Chicago, April 2013), where it sold for $2,232.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Maria I 640 Reis 1792 (Lisbon), low crown variety, sharply struck XF with attractive gray toning, struck at Lisbon without mint mark. Very scarce date and grade." The type was struck in Lisbon 1787-95 and Rio 1791-1800. This is a rare date. The 1793 is reported with the same mintage yet is one eighth the price.
Recorded mintage: 3,484,000 from Rio (mintmark "R") plus 6,250 from Lisbon (no mintmark).
Specification: 17.76 g, 0.917 fine silver, .523 troy oz ASW.
