The first specimen was lot 3339 in Goldberg sale 62 (Beverly Hills, February 2010), where it sold for $2,300. The catalog description[1] noted, "Brazil. 6400 Reis, 1789-R. Rio mint. Maria I, 1786-1805. Veiled bust right. Reverse: Italic arms. Sharply struck with original mint brilliance. PCGS graded MS-62." This type was struck at Rio and Bahia 1786-90. It is considerably scarcer than the succeeding type (KM 226, struck 1789-1805), which featured the queen in a different headdress.
Recorded mintage: 263,000.
