This specimen was lot 37592 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2025), where it sold for $1,440. The catalog description[1] noted, "BRAZIL. 6400 Reis (Peca), 1778-R. Rio de Janeiro Mint. Maria I & Pedro III. NGC AU-53." This type was struck 1777-86 and is among the more available colonial gold coins of Brazil tho the 1777 is a rare date.
Recorded mintage: 378,000 plus a few struck for José I.
Specification: 14.34 g, 0.917 fine gold, .423 troy oz AGW.
