Brazil 1764-B 3200 reis
This specimen was lot 31070 in Heritage sale 3135 (Pittsburgh, September 2026), where it sold for $39,040. The catalog description[1] noted, "Brazil: José I gold 3200 Reis (1/2 Peça) 1764-B AU53 NGC, Bahia mint. First we have handled of this scarce date, this single example graded by NGC weaves wholly original surfaces with a charming amber patina. With no examples hitting the auction block in the past decades and a date [that] is missing from the Eliasberg, Norweb, RLM and Petropolis collections, we anticipate the interest of advanced collectors. From the Vila Rica Collection of Brazilian Gold Coins, Part II." While the 6400 réis is relatively available, its fractions (3200 réis, 1600 réis and 800 réis) are much scarcer. This type is recorded from Bahia for 1752-54, 1757, 1763-68 and 1773-75. This specimen realized nearly five times the catalog value in Uncirculated.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 7.17 g, 0.917 fine gold, 20 mm diameter, .211 troy oz AGW.
