Stack's Bowers 2022 ANA sale, lot 34345
SB822-34345r.jpg

This specimen was lot 34345 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2022), where it sold for $21,600. The catalog description[1] noted, "BRAZIL. 3200 Reis, 1763-B. Bahia Mint. Jose I. NGC AU-58. A VERY RARE fractional issue that is not at all often encountered in problem-free states of preservation, this barely handled example provides ample brilliance glistening in the fields and a crisp, elegant strike. Undoubtedly a superior specimen for the advanced collector of Brazilian gold." While the 6400 réis is relatively available, its fractions (3200 réis, 1600 réis and 800 réis) are much scarcer. It's a tossup as whether the Rio or Bahia mint issues are scarcer for the fractions. This type is listed for Bahia for 1752-57, 1763-68, 1773-75.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 7.17 g, 0.917 fine gold.

Catalog reference: Fr-66; KM-183.1.
