This specimen was lot 23768 in Heritage sale 3026 (Long Beach, October 2013), where it sold for $763.75. The catalog description[1] noted, "Jose I gold 4000 Reis 1758, AU Details - Removed from Jewelry NGC. "Josephus Dominvs" type. A bit too bright, but without an apparent mount removal. From The RLM Collection, Part II." The type was struck 1751-77 without mintmark. Later types exist dated 1778-1822. It is the largest of the "moedas provinciales" series and the only one that can be called somewhat common.
