This specimen was lot 23750 in Heritage sale 3026 (Long Beach, October 2013), where it sold for $1,175. The catalog description[1] noted, "Jose I gold 4000 Reis 1754/3, Uncirculated Details - Surface Hairlines NGC. 'Iosephus Dominvs' type. Cleaned long ago. An interesting 4/3 overdate. From The RLM Collection, Part II." The type was struck 1751-77 without mintmark. Later types exist dated 1778-1822. It is the largest of the "moedas provinciales" series and the only one that can be called somewhat common.
