This specimen was lot 494 in Ponterio sale 164 (New York, January 2012), where it sold for $1,380. The catalog description[1] noted, "BRAZIL. 6,400 Reis, 1753-R. Jose I (1750-77). With certificate. Sandwashed. ALMOST UNCIRCULATED. Ex: Clive of India Treasure." This type was struck 1751-77 and is among the more available colonial gold coins of Brazil.

Recorded mintage: 475,000.

Specification: 14.34 g, 0.917 fine gold, .423 troy oz AGW.
